Presenting an interesting PowerPoint presentation is something everyone has to master prior to giving one. It is always better to have a presentation with both text and visuals to communicate to the audience as it has been scientifically proven that some people are more text-oriented, while others are more visually oriented. Therefore, to make sure you are getting your message across to everybody, it is better to use both texts and visuals in the presentation.
It is always better to use serif fonts in your presentation, as they are easier to read. Serif fonts are fonts like Times New Roman or Georgia that have serifs or ‘tails’ at the ends of the lines. These tails help the letters fit to form words. Fonts like Arial and Verdana have no tails and are called Sans Serif font. It is always better to mix fonts in the presentation, with perhaps Arial Bold font being used for headlines, and Times New Roman bold for the body text. Use italics, underlines and drop shadows sparingly in the presentation, as they are hard to read. Do not make your font size smaller than 18 in the presentation, as it makes it difficult for the audience in the back row to see it. Always use Microsoft (True Type) fonts as this is found on most computers running PowerPoint. Sometimes your presentation may have to be viewed on other computers. Therefore, if the host computer does not have the font you had used for the presentation, it automatically replaces it with its default font, thus formatting the fonts differently. Give out handouts to the audience if there is any point you want to be stressed on in the presentation. It is better to use colored slides and handouts, as black and white ones look drab and boring. Colors not only give a dramatic effect, it also creates associations in the minds of the audience.
It is better to use bullet points or keywords in your presentation as long sentences require you and the audience to read the slide, wherein while you read, the audience ignores you and scans ahead! Eliminate articles such as an, a, the from the sentence, and focus on the concept of the presentation, and not on the words. When giving a presentation, it is always better to remember the K.I.S.S. formula. It means Keep It Simple, Stupid or, Keep It Short and Simple! If you have busy slides and handouts, it will only distract and confuse the audience. Use more of white space, and apply the 6x6 rule when making slides. There should be only six lines in the slide, with each line consisting of not more than six words. Avoid too many slides in the presentation. Remember, your slides and handouts are an aid to support your message. It is always better to have less than one slide used in a minute, in a presentation. A 25-minute presentation should not exceed 20 slides. Remember all this to know and give an interesting PowerPoint presentation.
