Status of Tax Rebate Program
If you filed your 2000 tax return by April 15, 2001, you should have received your tax rebate check by now.
Last Friday the Treasury Department sent out the last regular group of checks. Over the past 2.5 months, around 83 million checks that total about $35 billion have been mailed in the order of the last two digits of taxpayers' Social Security numbers.
Rebate checks will continue to be mailed through the end of the year as the IRS processes 2000 income tax returns sent in by late-filers and taxpayers with extensions.
Here's what the Treasury Department says about the rebate mailing. With this kind of volume dumped on the postal system, it's remarkable that it works as well as it does!
