THE BIG ADVANTAGE OF BEING A TIGHTWAD

By Norm Williams

The big advantage of a tightwad

is having control of your money so you can

buy anything you want. Years ago I

purchased a new Chevrolet for $935 dollars

cash and I never forgot that. I learned a

lesson buying my first car for $250 dollars

and then paid more than that in interest

before the loan was paid off. I resolved

never to buy anything with a loan again.

I saved my money a dollar at a time.

When I accumulated enough in the bank I paid

cash for my first house. I never had a

mortgage payment. The result of paying with

cash is that I always had money to buy

whatever I wanted and never felt poor again.

While I did not make big money I had more

in the bank than most people who bought

everything on the easy time payment plan.

I am a rummage sale fanatic. I go

to the best neighborhoods to find rummage

sales with high class merchandise. I buy

luxury items that I would never buy if I

had to pay the retail price in a store.

The truth is at one time I would shop a

the mall and go to the fancy big stores to

buy. Since I started shopping at rummage

sales I have not been in a shopping mall

in years. I cannot remember the last time

I was in a department store.

On the internet I have been burned

many times with big expensive programs that

promised many benefits. Sure I purchased

a ton of books, manuals and programs for

my computer. Most did absolutely nothing

for me. So now I set a limit of $20's tops

and refuse to pay more. Here is a letter

I sent to a program that looked really good:

Thanks for your letter. Let me say

that I have purchased tons of stuff like

your program that made big promises and

sounded great. Now I am clearing off my

shelves of hundreds of books and I am

getting down to the nitty gritty. I am

taking all these programs to the dump

to throw them away.

It would be nice if some smart

people who know all the answers would be

reasonable and have some common sense

programs at a low cost I can afford. But

everyone makes big offers that I get from

thousands of Emails and I am disgusted with

that. I have set a limit of $20 dollars for

anything that I purchase from now on. In

fact I get many of my best books at rummage

sales where I purchase many expensive items

for 25 cents. I have a house full of some of

the best programs that I got this way.

I cannot imagine that I will ever

pay for anything that is over $20 ever again.

This limit has saved me hundreds perhaps

thousands of dollars. Maybe I will miss some

of the great stuff priced at $47 or $67 but

I doubt it. Unless you are willing to send

it for $20 I will have to pass up your offer,

that is the bottom line. I may be a cheap

skate but I have a couple of bucks in my

pocket that I saved from not buying any

more expensive stuff. I intend to publish

this in my newsletter to see if there

are some others who would agree with me.
