Dot Biz is Here

For a long time, many online businesses have felt the

frustration of "all the good names have gone" which has been

attached to the .com suffix for as long as anyone can remember.

Finally at 00:00:01 EST on November 7th, .biz went live, which

means that .biz names can now be registered at domain

registration sites across the Internet.

The launch of .biz was delayed for two entire weeks since

Neulevel, the company behind .biz wanted to be sure that their

system would be fully prepared to handle new names'

registrations after .biz's launch.

Some cautious web entrepreneurs may want to know more about the

company running .biz before making a decision as to whether it

is worthwhile to register a .biz name. NeuLevel is a joint

venture that leverages the strength of two companies, NeuStar,

Inc. and Melbourne IT, LTD. The former has credentials and

experience in managing large, mission-critical databases while

the latter possesses technically advanced domain name

registration capabilities.

If you are wondering why anyone would want to register a .biz

name, the following are some possibilities:

(1) .biz is the first and only global top-level domain (TLD)

built for business, and no others are planned by the Internet

Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

(2) .biz enhances a company's presence on the Web with a domain

name that means "serious business." Therefore, if you

currently own a .net or .org web site because the .com name

that you had wanted was taken by someone else, .biz would be a

good alternative.

(3) If you have a "hot" .com domain and are fearful of

cybersquatting, registering the .biz version now will stop a

cybersquatter from doing so in the future.

(4) Your competitor may also seize the launch of .biz to

register the .biz version of your .com name. You can pre-empt

that by registering the name first.

(5) If your current .com domain is too long and awkward, this is

the perfect time to register a short and snappy name. Remember,

short and sweet are always good for branding. One last thing

to remember if you are considering a .biz name is that .biz

names are intended specifically for bona fide business or

commercial use. For example, you are not allowed to use a .biz

name exclusively for personal and noncommercial purposes.

Neither can you use a .biz name for the expression of

noncommercial ideas. To get more information on the definition

of "bona fide business or commercial use", please read the .biz

faqs:

Finally, it is about time that you have a share of those good

names. Take them before they are gone once again.
