Avoid the mistakes I made as an Internet rookie and you will be cashing

in bigger checks than your competitors.

Five years ago when I first decided to make an Internet presence I wish I had the knowledge and experience I have today. Sure I read the ebooks, joined the discussion groups, and subscribed to just about every newsletter and ezine out there. But they all failed to warn and teach me about the common mistakes marketers make on the Internet.

Today I will share with you a few of these common, overlooked mistakes that you may learn to avoid them. I’m sure we can go on for days with each example, but I choose to summarize them for faster reading.

Free is always good, but..

As with any business you must dress the part. Your website is you and your company’s image to millions of possible visitors from just about every corner of this planet. Forget about getting your cousin, niece, friend, neighbor, or even you with your limited HTML experience design your website. Get a professional to do the job for you, get it done correctly the first time. There are so many little things that the

professional website designers can do to enhance the image of your company as well as the functionally of the site.

404 Error, page cannot be found…

Don’t advertise your website’s URL before it’s live. Customers that could not find your site the first time will be lost forever. Make sure your website is fully functional and run tests before you ask people to visit. “Coming Soon” and “Under Construction” is just as bad! If it’s not ready, don’t promote it.

Yikes! I can’t wait for around for this to load…

Those cool images, roll over features, high end graphics, and long pages only make pages take forever to load. We’ve all been to sites where after 15-20 seconds and the page doesn’t load we click to somewhere else. Stick to less images and more fast loading text. If you need images make sure that the file size is small and fast loading. Technology is great, but not because it can be done, should it be. A basic, fast loading site will get people staying to browse!

I’m Lost…

Are you providing a clear map of your website? You spent a lot of time, money, and hard work developing content for your visitors. Can they find it? Your navigation should be clear, to the point, and on every page. Remember not all visitors will enter your site from the main or home page. By placing links to all main pages on every page, you will give your visitors an easy way of navigating your site. Provide your visitors

with a site map or driving directions.

I’m interested, but I have a few questions…

Provide your visitors with as many options as possible to communicate with you (phone, email, fax, mailing address). Be sure to state your business hours on your site, you don’t want customers calling when you cannot take a call. This will only upset them. Answer your email requests ASAP. If you cannot respond immediately, consider setting up an auto responder with a short message to acknowledge that you received their email and they will get an answer from you. To avoid getting to many

customer questions, create a Frequently Asked Questions page with as many scenarios that you can think off. Just take a look at the questions you’re getting by email for a basis for the FAQ page.

Convince your visitors over time to become customers…

Collect your visitor’s name and email address. Ezines, newsletters, website updates, or notices will give you the chance to covert some of your visitors into customers over time. Email is a very powerful marketing tool, when you have your own list. Take every opportunity you get to collect your visitors email address. It’s also important that you not only ask for their email address, but also their names.

This will allow you to personalize the message or offer you send to them.

I better get this offer out to my list now..

In my rush to send out an offer to my list I completely forgot what day it was. The message was sent , but the numbers were horrible. Avoid sending an email broadcast before, during, and after the weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Monday). All this does is add your message to the other message that have piled up over the weekend that the reader must go through when they open their in-box Monday morning. Most likely your message will not even get opened, and sent directly to the trash. I have found that a message sent Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday goes into a less cluttered inbox and the likelihood of the

message being read is much greater.

Chris, here’s an amazing offer just for you..

As mentioned above get the name of your visitors along with their email address. By using something that will “mail merge” your broadcast to your list, you can personalize every message that you send. When you include the name of the recipient in the subject and body of the message it gets more attention and chance are they will at least open the message.

We’re the best, buy our products…

Anyone can make a claim that their product or service is the best. Take some time to explain why. Ask previous customers for their opinion, then use it as testimonials on your site. Well, providing that they are kind to you and sing praises. When visitors see that others have tried your product with success, it helps convince them to buy.

It’s built they’ll come..

Now we all know why so many websites fail!

It’s a misconception that having a website is your ticket to easy, fast money. Most of your time should be spent promoting your website for it to thrive. Submit to search engines and directories, here’s another time when you will need the help of a professional. Getting listed on a search engine, especially the bigger ones is difficult work and in most cases you have one shot at getting listed or ranked high. A professional

will prepare your site with the relevant keywords, and meta tags to enhance your chances at being ranked top in the keyword category that best describes your site. For immediate traffic I have found that using the pay per click search engines, even though they may tend to be expensive is well worth the money. You get immediate traffic and you can really target the people you want to sell to.

My final pointer for today is, keep track of numbers. For every

advertising or promotion campaign you do, keep exact stats for hits, leads, and sales. This will allow you to know where your advertising money is best spent to get the best return on investment. Don’t spend money in places when it will not make you money!

To your success.
