OVERCOMING ADVERSITY

One of the biggest challenges people starting a home based

business face is the adversity of friends and family regarding

their new venture.

It's hard to keep a positive attitude when faced with a multitude

of negative comments that are designed to make you feel

inadequate. And that's basically what these negative comments

do. They make you question yourself and your abilities.

Often the reason behind the negativity of family and friends is

because, they too often secretly dream of being on their own,

but lack the courage and confidence to take action. So, they

voice their own doubts to you. I don't think they truly want to

see you fail, but if you do, then they have the satisfaction of

knowing they were right in their own choices of sticking with

traditional employment, rather than stepping out on their own.

The problem with this is that you often find yourself defending

your views and beliefs that you are doing the right thing by

becoming self-employed. It can be hard to keep a positive

attitude when you, yourself, harbor secret doubts.

But that's what you must do. When you receive negative

comments, you have the choice to listen to them and reinforce

any doubts in your mind, or you can turn that negativity into a

positive thought instead.

Don't try to argue with those people, it will get you no where.

They have their beliefs and you have yours...that you WILL

succeed because you have faith in yourself. Sometimes, a

comment such as, "I appreciate your concern, but I believe

I can do this. Perhaps you have some ideas that will help

me to succeed" can turn the tables. Just a simple comment

can stop them in their tracks and get them to look at positive

ways to help.

It is important that you stay motivated in your endeavors.

Read motivational books and success stories of others who

have successfully made the transition from employee to

self-employed. These will bolster your spirits and show

you that it can be done.

Reaffirm your commitment to succeed daily with positive

quotes posted around the house or near your work area.

Here are a few of my favorites:

The best way to predict the future is to invent it.

To be a success in business, be daring, be first, be different.

...Henry Marchant, 1789

Fear begins to melt when you take action toward a goal you

really want.

...RGA

Reach high, for stars lie hidden in your soul. Dream deep,

for every dream precedes the goal.

...Pamela Vaull Starr
