Tips for Getting Awards for Your Site
by Tracie Johansen
Winning Web Site Awards can bring increased recognition and
the Traffic that goes along with it.
Before you submit your site for awards be sure, it is ready.
Here is a checklist you will need to get ready:
* No broken links, be sure and check all the links on your
site and that they are all in working order.
* No "Under Construction Signs" Your site should be
completely done and functional or it won't even get
a consideration.
* Be sure you have quality content, really look at your
site and see it as others would. Have people you know
look at it and ask for an honest opinion.
* Make sure your site is easy to navigate.
* Make sure to include good keywords and use descriptive
sentences so the search engines will pick them up.
* Use only necessary graphics and make sure they go with
the theme of your site. Don't fill your pages with so many
graphics that it takes forever to load your pages. Don't
use too many banners.
* Use easily to read formats and fonts. Don't use backgrounds
that make reading your site impossible.
* Be sure to check your SPELLING!
* Add Interactively to your site (forms, newsletters, chats,
courses, search windows)
* Offer valuable Resources: Great, unique content. Or a new
concept on the web that breaks new ground. Update your site
often (change colors, add new graphics, add new articles,
just keep it fresh). A Great web site must include both
depth and substance. It must stand on it's own; above the
crowd, and keep your visitor's interest
* The best way for you to assess the merits of your own
site is through your own experience and talent and by
visiting other award winning sites and getting some
comparisons from the various categories.
* DON'T have pages that scroll 8-9 screens
* Time is of the essence make sure your site loads fast.
* Be sure to include contact information on your site. People
want to know whom they are dealing with. This doesn't mean
you have to give out all your personal information - just
enough to show credibility to your site.
* Give your site a unique look, one that shows you took
care and effort to design and that you care about quality
and usefulness.
Now that your site is ready, What Now?
Get your information ready to submit!
Set up a file with all your information. I use my notebook,
but you can use whatever text file you like best. Put it all
together so as you submit you will be ready to just cut and
paste your information into the forms.
Here is a checklist of what you need to get ready:
* Have Headlines ready 5-10 words
* Description of your site: be sure to have at least 10
different descriptions ranging from 15 words to 100 words.
* 15 keywords with the most important ones listed first as
many award sites allow less.
* Your contact information:
Name:
Address:
City, state, zip
Country
email address
URL's
* Set up files for each site you submit to and keep the
following information in each file.
1. URL and name of your site
2. The description you used and the category you placed it
under.
3. If a reciprocal link is required put the HTML code in
the file.
4. Description of the site
5. URL of your listing (if it applies)
6. Date verified that you received the award
7. Plenty of room for notes
Good Luck!
